The Canadian Government has given $102,500 of tax-payers' money to the Thunder Bay CEDC to 'hire a consulting company' to help local firms secure sub-contracting jobs connected with the Alberta oilsands development. The only problem is that this is exactly what recently hired CEDC CEO Steve Demmings is already being paid to do but hasn't done.

The federal government has announced $102,500 in FedNor funding for the Thunder Bay Community Economic Development Commission. Conservative MP Bruce Stanton travelled to Thunder Bay from his Simcoe North riding to make the announcement. CEDC CEO Steve Demmings said the money will be used to hire a consulting company to help local firms secure sub-contracting jobs connected with the Alberta oilsands development. The only problem is that this is exactly what recently hired CEDC CEO Steve Demmings is already paid to do but hasn't done.
“There‘s just awesome potential coming out of the tarsands right now,” Demmings said Friday. “The province of Alberta is facing a critical shortage of skilled labour, and we have lots of skilled labour here, so we can provide a very valuable destination for work that‘s coming out of the tarsands.”
After learning of the funding announcement, many Thunder Bay tax-payers were left wondering which of Council's 'friends' would be awarded the consulting contract and why is Demmings who's salary is an estimated $160,000 per year not doing what he is already being paid to do.
