"This is what we call home" youth open house on pollution

Open House: This is What We Call Home - Pollution affecting Fort William
First Nation.


On Sunday December 17, 2006 Fort William First Nation youth will hold an
Open House to present findings of a project that mapped the reserve for
random dumpsites, and the industrial activity adjacent to the community.

This youth-led project engaged community youth in identifying pollution
issues affecting the reserve, and the high incidence of industrial activity
next to the community. It was initiated to raise awareness about how Fort
William First Nation is being used as a dumping area for household garbage,
hazardous waste, industrial waste, medical wastes and derelict vehicles.

The Open House will display a poster map showing the approximately 250
random dumpsite that were found on the community during the November 2006
mapping exercise. It will also be the forum to display a photo exhibit
developed by Fort William First Nation youth, titled 'This is What We Call
Home' - a visual representation of the pollution affecting the community.
Project representatives will be available throughout the event to answer
questions and inform visitors about the findings.

The Open House will take place at the Fort William First Nation community
centre, on Anemki Drive, from 2 pm until 8:30 pm. Everyone is welcome to
attend.
