this is so sad. it's so weird to see the places you've grown up turn into ghost towns.

It's sad to see so many mills shutting down in northwestern ontario....it's no mystery that young people don't see a future for themselves here

Wow, that's all I can say.

You are really gifted at what you do, keep it up.

What is not focused on here is the fact the company is dismantelling the mill, so it can no longer run again.

Often, these companies are shutting down manufacturing facilaties not because they can't make a profit, but because they don't make enough profit.

By reducing production capacity, this pushes up the prices, so that remaining facilaties are more profitable for the company.

If only Ontario would adopt a "run it of walk away " stance for manufacturing. If a company no longer wanted to run a manufacturing plant, it would be required to put away money to pay pensions, clean up/dismantel it, but could not tear it down or dismantel it.

It's terrible to see yet another mill closure, and what's more, the fact that the company is dismantling the plant (removing "fixed capital") taking away any hope of a factory occupation.

The last one to leave NW Ontario please turn off the lights. Why is it that a land with so many resources and hard working people, does so poorly economically. It may be time to release ourselves from the thumbscrews set by Ottawa and Toronto. I left Thunder Bay in 1980, vowing to return when the economy improved and there may be hope to find good work. 26 years later, I am still waiting in Edmonton. I recommend everyone view a documentary called "The Take". A very inspiring film about what the unemployed factory workers did in Argentina. Occupy, resist, produce.

I would love to see that in Northwestern Ontario. It might work in Thunder Bay, or in another town, but likely not Red Rock.

The problems are energy pricing, transportation and supply. The first can be compensated by cutting the fat of massive CEO and managment salaries. If the workers were running the factory and distributing profits equally between them, this would probably mean everybody makes as much or more money, and the mill can afford its power demand.

However, transportation is a bit of an issue. Would the CN/CPR allow a worker run factory to contract with them? This historically ultra-capitalist element is often overlooked during discussions like this. If you can't move you goods, you can't run a factory and an occupation could easily be put down by the railway. Most importantly, not control over the railway could be accomplished because Red Rock is off the main rail line. A town like Long Lac or Armstrong would have a better chance at defending their interests.

Finally, related to that, is supply of materials. Wood chips could be found, but are getting harder and more expensive to come by since the rape of the Boreal Forest, within 200 miles, is nearly complete. The real issue though, is finding chemical and other suppliers that will do business with your worker-run factory. They will keep their loyalty to the big companies and if instructed not to do business with a rogue factory lest lose their main clients, they won't.

So there it is. A good idea, and maybe possible, but unlikely. The realities of the North make our situation very tough, especially for Red Rock. Worker occupation in Buenas Aires, primarily in the clothing/textile industry, along with 200 other factories, is more realistic and it is still only a partial success. Capital and the state would react with such ferousity it would be amazing.

All that said, I still would love to see them pull it off.

I was terribly saddened to hear that the mill was shutting down. I have so many memories of Red Rock as a child.

You always hear about closures but it is always someone else, not people you know. This hurts.

I work in a field, that provides assistance for those seeking training. 5 years ago, I assisted numerous individuals to train for the forestry industry. Within 2 years there was no work left, leaving mills to shut down as this one in Red Rock has recently done. As stated earlier, our forests have been raped and our future here in the Northwest is very uncertain.

Yes, I cried:
for the people who are grieving the loss of their life work and lifestyle, in many cases their homes and home communities;
for the economic losses within the communities and the Province;
for the land and the resources that will never be returned to their natural state;
for a way of life, like the rural school house that has left us behind in this age of constant change.
I pray that the people who have been affected by these changes, not only in the mills but in the support industries, are able to move on with their lives. In their shock and grief they need to remember that their families too are living with the fear of change and loss of income.
We all need to ask Govt. what programs are available to help deal with these changes?

It is a shame to see these Pics I viewed the very same things here in the Kenora mill. Yes the company quickly removed what it had to, to make sure we could not find a buyer. But it remains that you need 3 things to fight for these companys. You need a strong union which we all have, a town to support you and most of all a Government that wants people to stay in towns here in the north. But this Gov. is not interested in Northern Ontario we know that a 45$ megawatt is and can be done right now it would make the diffrence but they will not do it. This Gov. is trying to get all of NOnt to move some where else. It is also to be noted that how quickly we are forgotten does anyone hear anything about the mill in Kenora, NO it is old news. I feel for Red Rock I have relatives there , also I feel for all the other towns in this ordeal. In closing there is only one thing we can do and it will have to wait for election day. We need change and fast.

My uncle worked there as far back as i could remember. My mom from red rock and dad from nipigon. Every summer from thunder bay we would go to see my grandparents in red rock. I would wake up to the trains whistle in the morning. Now my uncle is out of a job with all his senority gone; in what seems like a blink of an eye. It just wasn't fair. The mill was so important, but i guess not to anyone close to it. thank you for the pictures.

It is indeed a sad state of affairs we find our selves in. When I say state I refer to "The States" as I feel we are being held hostage by our southern neighbours, NAFTA, and a government not willing( or perhaps able ?) to make a stand on how we conduct our businesses in our home land. I had the pleasure to tour your fine mill a few years back, as well as take in an afternoon of fishing neither of which I will ever forget. I understand why we call fellow Union members brothers and sisters, but you people made it very clear, we are all alike, and share in similar pleasures, and unfortunately, similar pains. From all of us in Dryden who now understand all to well what it is you are going through (to some extent), we are proud to have been affiliated with you's through The CEP.
