IMC Thunder Bay Needs Volunteers! : Thunderbay IMC

The Thunder Bay Independent Media Centre is a volunteer-run organization. This is a big job and we are currently in desperate need of volunteers! Our organization is open to the public, as we depend on diverse community involvement to support the decentralized nature of the IMC Network. Remember, IMC volunteers are free to contribute as much or as little as they like, however some contribution to the IMC project is a pre-requisite for participation in the decision-making process. The following is a list of volunteer "positions" that currently need to be filled.

-Idea people! Indymedia depends on the creativity of many people all over the world, including Thunder Bay.

-Fundraisers! We are struggling to keep our center funded and open to the public. If you have any fundraising ideas, are willing to contribute some time to existing fundraising ideas, or have some money to donate, then we need your help.

-Outreach people! Making and distributing posters, flyers and pamphlets, giving presentations to highschool, university, college or community groups, and anything else you can think of to rais awareness about corporate media issues and the Indymedia movement.

-Centre Staff! We want to keep the Thunder Bay Independent Media Resource Center open to the public. Our goal is to offer regular hours but we need people to contribute their time to staff the centre.

-Techs! Indymedia uses the latest code coming out of the open-source movement. We are in deperate need of folks who possess knowledge of, or who are willing to learn, any of the following : PHP, Linux (Debian), Apache, and networking.

-Global Liasons! The Indymedia Network utilizes e-mail listservers to organize local collectives, as well as organize on a global level. The opportunities here are incredibly diverse (see: http://lists.indymedia.org), however there are several key world-wide
lists that should ideally have representatives from our local collectives

This list will be updated as things change so check back, and also feel free to make any suggestions by adding your comments to this article or sending an email to imc-thunderbay@lists.indymedia.org .

If anyone can make a simple poster, it could be made into a PDF or Word doc and many people could print it, put an ad in the local paper, or as an editorial peice and even maybe a Public Service Announcement would work on local radio.

People do not know about the independant media ... it is time to start advertising it in the generic ways where the real people will see it like in Laundry mats, pool hals, bulletin boards of bars, etc,

Go where the real people are... maybe even the back of the taxi cap head rest behind clear plastic.. make business cards and leave them all over the freakin place ;)

open a newspaper box and insert into each and every newspaper a sheet advertising it...

Go nuts folks... community centres, lobby's on benches... everywhere. elevators.. you get the idea.. business cards, everywhere like rain ;)

John, thanks for the ideas. Unfortunately we are but a few volunteers and we are all extremely busy and feeling burnt out, we simply don't have enough time to do all of this. If you would like to contribute some time to this project it would be much appreciated! We already have some flyers, pamphlets, and other text. Remember to get on our organizational listserver if you are going to volunteer because that is one way that we communicate and even make decisions as a group, for example "is this a good flyer?" "is this a good strategy", etc. If you can't volunteer, thank you anyways because we need more input like this from the community. Keep the input coming people!

I hear you guys are looking to raise money. Perhaps
you're already doing this, but in my experience, a
great way to fundraise is through fooooooood. Bake
sales or Persion sales work out pretty well but
personally I think pizza works best. I'm not sure about
all the dynamics involved but I know that some have
sold pizza at the pub on key nights to make a fair bit.
If you guys could set something up like sell pizza
there once a week, and have people sign up to do it for
a night or half a night, I think you could make a few
buckaroos. Another idea would be to make little buttons
or stickers with important messages on them and selling
them for cheep or donation. Think about it, and if you
think it could work, I'd for sure be willing to help.

I know that I tastefully mention the indymedia as an alternative media source (to the less fortunate and unaware) whenever a geopolitical topic (inevitably) pops up on my fav message boards.

ie. "Check out indymedia.org for some interesting articles about that topic..."

It's free, and it reaches a lot of people.

I live in Ottawa so physical volunteer is not applicable at the moment, but as I suggested in the first suggestion it is only going to really get spread OFFLINE.

I am totally an online junkie so don't get me wrong, but maybe the youth in your area could take on the project or the footwork. The youth certainly have things to say.

It is hard to organize all this I am sure.. and yes, we need to live our lives.. but schedule just one day where just one of you on a weekend make a package, and deliver it to a place such as scouts, or other youth groups in your area.

The people who have serious issues to get to the public do not necessarily have online access. Especially in a smaller town like Thunder Bay.

I suggest you keep photocopies of the flyers with you in your car, and where ever you go, drop a few on a bench in the mall... or something like that. Leave a sheet or two in the back of a taxi, or on a bus...

To advertise an online presence, you need to advertise in the real world first.. then you get people excited enough to actually want to get online in the first place you know?

I really am excited about indy media, and at the moment I am incapacitated with a 33.6kbps dialup account which I am severely limited to online time.

But really, one day, take a nice walk for once.. just for the sake of having a nice walk... and bring a bag of flyers with you, even ask the local computer store to put them on the counter.. they would love it.

Maybe even the librarian would allow some to be dropped there because it is an information source.

Local community centres, look in the yellow pages, find local community resource centres, family counselling for one.. people have some severe issues with C.A.S for example that the mainstream media is too politiccally tied to to get involved with.

So just sit and try to think about what peoples lives are affected by local issues... handicapped? Is there enough acccessibility to all local buildings? Do they have parking issues like no handicaped parking in the mall?

Find the people, send the groups an email or phone call. Computer students are a great target. they might take on local indy media as a project who knows.. it could get costs covered by the students themelseves.... I am just briain storming here, mind you it feels like more of a breeze haha.. oh boy...

As for money issues... why not put out on the table the exact costs. Let the people know what they are paying for. I for one do not like to give cash as it is so tight for me, unless I can see where it goes.

I trust indymedia.org of course, but some might not know enough to trust. An expeses list might be of good favour. ;)

Wouldn't mind helping out when I could...but my scheddy can be a bit hectic at times. Do know a bit on programming, but not php or linux (yet, anyways). Took Cisco, so I do know a little about networking.

are there any licensing fees or costs to set up a booth or small 'tent' somewhere?

also, what about setting up http://www.churchofcraft.org (or something similar) and have the centre as a contact location? is this possible? this would ensure traffic flow into the centre would familiarize various age groups with indymedia. since the church of craft is really only about believing in one's creativity and the potential to be creative it could serve, simply, as a different avenue to advertise the centre/site. there could be craft fairs, demos... many crafters just want an opportunity to sell and display their art and some pay hefty fees to have a table at an event.

I like it. Do you already have pictures? Or would you like "us" (whoever that is, I don't know) to come in for a photo shoot? Though I must say I'd prefer having a hammer and sickle and maybe the devil in the background instead of the swastikas and burning crosses, but you are the man with the vision so whoam I to argue. Perhaps you can draw little devil horns too? Or put pirate eye patches on the eyes? or on the nose? Where would you be putting these posters? On those "community billboards"? or are you going to break the law and put em on the poles (sounds like something one of those anarchists would do...or are they commies, or nazis, bah it doesn't matter). Hi great to see an independant in this great town of ours. Being a long time resident and getting older and more interested in local issues i am worried concerned and sometime outright upset at the state of this city. the current status ( read stasis) quo in t bay does nothing creative and definately keeps the civic "stasis" encouraged,. As such young people see little dynamic future other than serving the pensioned folk in this service industry orientated town. this cant last , or can it , as the conservative grey hairs have the last say at council and at voting time. so i will spread the good word and hope to see some critical articles regarded the stasis quo in this town of ours, and how to shkae it up for the youth and the future.

IMC has a world to investigate and report so that public views can and will be enlarged. you have nothing to lose, and a world to win. so get deep and dramatic and expose lies and hypocracy of the media corporatum. for instance there was never a time before the last century that a ruling class of imperialist people had with push button hi-tech efficiency six-overkill of all livability at their disposal. such contradictions should be acted on until the mass of working people the vast majority wins and victory will be peace equals disarmament. the fact that such a huge contradiction is covered up by the exploiters in the name of a false freedom is a crime against the planets livabillity. they not you should be ashamed of their ignorant betrayal of all that struggles to live and progress. canada needs to get out of all military alliances and work to put the technology and sciences to solidarity with the planets livability. the enemy is war itself and its destructive wrecking of the ecological , organic green livability. we could then use the labour power of those that have dedicated themselves to destroying the planet to socially usefull positive constructive non-polluting tools to re-tool the entire industrial revolution to wind, tidal, and solar power. these are dramatic contradictions and imagine the old order of coal, gas, oil, and atomic energy that indeed is demising the planets atmoshere and taking all the crew sizes of workers away from the needed tasks to save the planets livabillity--ie railways are now short crewed, such are the huge tasks ahead and it will not be easy but slow and steady work can get us back to paradise. make your lifes work well worth the effort.
